The Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, Calif., witnessed contrasting performances from Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly and later added a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, bringing her total medal count to four and five, respectively.
In the 100m butterfly event, Ruck, hailing from Kelowna, B.C., clocked a personal best time of 56.71 seconds, finishing behind American swimmer Gretchen Walsh. Australian Alexandria Perkins claimed the bronze with a time of 56.75.
Expressing her joy, Ruck mentioned, “This one [the women’s 100m butterfly] was a lot of fun.” She attributed her success to proper rest and trust in her preparation. Earlier in the competition, Ruck clinched a bronze in the women’s 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke, and the 4x100m medley relay.
Meanwhile, McIntosh faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final of the women’s 400m freestyle, despite winning the B final. The 19-year-old took responsibility for the mishap, admitting to a misjudgment in the morning heats.
McIntosh expressed her frustration, stating, “I was very mad at myself and I take full responsibility for missing that A final.” She vowed to learn from the experience and ensure it does not recur. McIntosh, who secured a silver in the women’s 200m freestyle and gold in the 400m individual medley, is determined to reflect on her performance and improve for future competitions.
In the men’s events, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk claimed silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney finished second, while Ekk secured third place. Tierney attributed his success to dedicated training, marking his first international gold medal.
Ruck continued her impressive performance by guiding Canada to a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay event alongside her teammates. The U.S. clinched gold in the women’s relay, while Australia secured silver. Additionally, the Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth behind the U.S., Australia, and Japan teams.
