“Hakainde Hichilema re-elected Zambia President in landslide win”

Zambia’s incumbent President, Hakainde Hichilema, secured a second consecutive 5-year term, facing a strong challenge from the opposition amid public dissatisfaction over ongoing challenges despite economic improvements. The official results, announced by the election commission early Tuesday, revealed Hichilema garnered approximately 60% of valid votes, while his main rival, Brian Mundubile, received around 38%.

Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis declared Hichilema Hakainde S as the president-elect of Zambia on August 18, 2026. Hichilema, aged 64, highlighted his economic achievements since taking office during the pandemic-induced debt crisis in 2021. Zambia, known for its copper reserves, has been a strategic battleground for China and the United States due to its mineral wealth.

Despite Hichilema’s anticipated victory given his incumbency advantage and experience in seven presidential campaigns, Mundubile, in his first bid for the presidency, mounted a notable challenge. The election process, initially peaceful according to international observers like the European Union, faced criticism for constraints on fundamental freedoms.

Following the election, tensions escalated rapidly, with authorities arresting 11 individuals, including key opposition figures, in a raid involving gunfire. The electoral commission temporarily halted vote counting due to reported violence against polling staff and ballot paper theft. Amid allegations of result tampering, the opposition demanded an independent inquiry, while Hichilema’s camp dismissed the claims.

The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops raised concerns over the army’s involvement in vote counting, emphasizing the police’s constitutional responsibility for maintaining order during elections. The opposition is expected to challenge the results legally, although the chances of success are deemed slim by experts. While isolated political unrest could occur, widespread turmoil is not foreseen in the near future.
