“British Army Embraces Ground Drones for Future Battles”

The leader of the British Army is set to address the integration of ground drones alongside future soldiers in upcoming battles. Highlighting the critical role of the Army in UK security, he underscored the country’s adoption of new technology and artificial intelligence.

General Sir Roly Walker, Chief of the General Staff, will discuss the preparedness of the UK for future warfare at the UK Land Warfare Conference. He has conveyed to weapons manufacturers the shift towards battles involving ground drones.

Expressing a clear directive to industry, General Walker stated that crewed platforms in the future should always be accompanied by uncrewed ground vehicles, labeling them as the essential vehicle of the 21st century. He emphasized the Army’s presence at the forefront and conclusion of conflicts.

In his address, he emphasized the significance of armies in seizing and holding ground, solidifying their importance from battlefield success to pivotal impact. General Walker asserted that the Army is rapidly evolving to meet future challenges.

His vision encompasses the Army’s ability to strike strategically, defend proactively, and fortify effectively. He argued that adaptability is key to success, with cultural transformation being as vital as technological advancements.

This strategic shift reflects a move towards unmanned and autonomous systems as a fundamental aspect of future land warfare. Former Armed Forces Minister Al Carns, who recently resigned, emphasized the necessity of drone warfare following insights from the Ukraine conflict.

General Walker proposed a 20-40-40 system for the Army, allocating 20% to human fighters, 40% to autonomous systems, and 40% to firepower. This system aims to enhance modern lethality and combat effectiveness.

Underlining the UK’s standing within NATO, General Walker stressed the importance of a robust and credible military contribution capable of operating at the highest levels of warfare.
