An American man, Tyler Wilkin, aged 35, was fatally shot in a manner suggesting an execution on a secluded Puerto Rico beach after expressing concerns about an unidentified individual referred to as “the howler.” His lifeless body was discovered with a single gunshot wound to the back of his head near Playa la Selva, a remote beach in the northeast of the Caribbean island, on July 10, shortly after 6am.
Tyler Wilkin, originally hailing from Ohio, had relocated to Puerto Rico in January 2024. He had been dropped off by his girlfriend at the isolated beach on July 8 with intentions to camp there for two days. During his stay, he conveyed distressing messages about an individual he dubbed “the howler,” who purportedly disturbed him by setting off fireworks and emitting wolf-like howls near his camping spot.
His final message, sent around 2am, mentioned the disruptive presence of “the howler.” Concern arose when Wilkin failed to send his customary early-morning message of “Good morning, love” by 6am. His lifeless body was found in the mangroves by a beachgoer on a morning stroll shortly after 6am.
Authorities suspect that Wilkin was shot at close range in what appears to be a targeted killing. Despite ongoing investigations, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Speculation surrounding the motive includes a possible robbery attempt, according to Wilkin’s girlfriend, Iva Mo, who expressed frustration over the lack of progress in the case.
In response to the tragedy, loved ones have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for a private investigator to delve into the circumstances of Wilkin’s death and seek justice. The fundraiser aims to uncover the truth and ensure that all leads are thoroughly explored. Wilkin’s family described him as someone who embraced life with enthusiasm, shared his happiness generously, and brought excitement and meaning to those around him.
Wilkin is survived by his parents, older brother, twin sister, and younger sisters, as detailed in his obituary. The family fondly remembers his infectious laughter, genuine smile, and his ability to make life feel vibrant and significant for everyone he encountered.
