“RCMP Investigates Grindr-Linked Attacks in North Vancouver”

North Vancouver RCMP is currently looking into a series of attacks that occurred involving individuals who were targeted via the Grindr dating app. According to authorities, the victims received invitations to meet through the app and were subsequently met by groups of young people who proceeded to assault them, issue threats, and damage their vehicles. Const. Paul Reece mentioned that the suspects are believed to be between the ages of 16 and 20.

Only two of the incidents were officially reported to the police, with the first incident occurring at Eldon Park on August 27, and the second at Ross Road Elementary School on August 29. Following a review of security footage, a third incident was identified at Lynn Valley Elementary School on August 31, and authorities are urging the victim in that case to come forward. Investigators suspect that all three incidents are linked.

Grindr, a popular app catering to the 2SLGBTQ+ community, has sparked concern within the queer community due to these events. The North Shore Pride Alliance issued a safety alert to its members in response to the assaults.

Chris Bolton, co-founder of the alliance, expressed worries about potential motives behind the attacks, suggesting they could be influenced by increasing intolerance, possibly originating from the United States and online platforms. Bolton emphasized the importance of youth in shaping the future and recommended caution when using the Grindr app, advising users to take safety measures such as informing a friend before meeting someone and opting for public meeting spots.

Despite the incidents, Bolton acknowledged the positive aspect of individuals discovering their authentic selves through connections made on Grindr. He condemned the violence and discrimination associated with the assaults and expressed trust in the RCMP’s ability to swiftly address the issue to prevent imitators. The Serious Crimes Unit of North Vancouver RCMP has been assigned to lead the investigation.

Authorities are encouraging anyone who witnessed suspicious activities or possesses relevant video recordings from the locations of the assaults on the specified dates to reach out to them.
