Eastlink Warns of Data Breach Impacting Customers

Telecommunications company Eastlink has issued a caution to its customers regarding a potential data breach. The firm, which operates in seven provinces and Bermuda, notified affected individuals via email just before 5 p.m. AT on Friday. Eastlink disclosed that accounts may have been compromised between late Wednesday and early Thursday, with exposed information possibly including customer names, contact details, account numbers, and PINs. The exact number of impacted individuals remains unknown.

One former customer, Caitlyn Horne from Halifax, who terminated her internet service with Eastlink in 2023, confirmed receiving the breach notification. Horne expressed concerns about the extent of information that may have been accessible, particularly for individuals with past accounts.

Horne emphasized the importance of transparency from the company and suggested providing credit monitoring services for affected customers. She shared her initial reaction upon receiving the email, expressing a sense of déjà vu given the frequency of data breaches and the uncertainty about the extent of unauthorized access.

In response to the incident, Eastlink issued an apology in the email and reported that affected platforms on its website and mobile app were promptly shut down upon discovery of the breach. Company representative Jill Laing mentioned that Eastlink is currently investigating the matter and no official statements will be made until Monday.
