The Toronto Blue Jays will honor longtime broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into their Hall of Excellence at Rogers Centre this Saturday. Martinez, who recently retired after calling over 4,000 games, had a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades with the Blue Jays as a player, manager, and broadcaster.
Expressing his gratitude to Blue Jays fans for their unwavering support, Martinez described the induction as a great honor during an interview with CBC Radio’s Metro Morning. Known for his distinctive broadcasting style and iconic catchphrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez credited his time in Milwaukee and the influence of former broadcaster Bob Youker for shaping his on-air persona.
Reflecting on his transition to retirement, Martinez highlighted the significant adjustment after being involved in professional baseball since 1967. He shared his intentions to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations but had to step back due to health reasons, having battled cancer for the second time in 2025.
Martinez, who is now cancer-free and in good health, will join the esteemed company of other Blue Jays icons in the Hall of Excellence. The exhibit, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, pays tribute to key figures who have contributed to the franchise’s legacy, including current members like Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay.
Recalling his initial skepticism upon joining the Blue Jays in 1981, Martinez admitted feeling “exiled” from his previous teams but later came to appreciate Toronto’s baseball culture and fan enthusiasm. Praising the city as a remarkable place to play, he fondly remembered last year’s World Series as one of the most memorable in recent history.
Looking ahead, Martinez expressed surprise at the challenges faced by star player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. amidst a tough season for the Jays, emphasizing the game’s unpredictable nature even for top athletes.
