Originally from Michigan, the 33-year-old Hellebuyck achieved a remarkable milestone by being honored as both the league’s most valuable player and top goalie following the 2024-25 NHL season, during which the Jets clinched the best record in the league for the first time in franchise history.
Hellebuyck, reflecting on his journey from being drafted by the Jets in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL draft, expressed his dedication to proving the team’s decision right. Notably, the goaltender was lauded by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year, who awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his outstanding performance in the Olympic gold-medal game against Canada at the Milano-Cortina Winter Games, where he made 41 saves on 42 shots. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor for United States citizens.
