“De Grasse Clinches Fifth Spot in Diamond League Final”

Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse secured his fifth spot in the Diamond League Final after finishing third in the 200-meter race at the Weltklasse Zürich meet. De Grasse clocked a time of 20.03 seconds, trailing behind American Kenny Bednarek and South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile. This race marked De Grasse’s return to the 200-meter event since his victory in Zagreb, Croatia, where he ran the distance in 19.95 seconds.

De Grasse, who holds the Canadian record of 19.62 seconds, achieved during the 2021 Olympic final in Tokyo, has a history of strong performances in the Diamond League. In 2023, he surprised many by becoming the Diamond League Trophy recipient, following a remarkable victory at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., making him the first Canadian to achieve this since Dylan Armstrong 12 years prior.

In the upcoming Diamond League Final in Belgium, De Grasse will be aiming to become the country’s first champion since Sarah Mitton’s victory in women’s shot put. The competition will feature top athletes like Dambile, Letsile Tebogo from Botswana, Bednarek, Makanakaishe Charamba from Zimbabwe, Courtney Lindsey from the United States, Reynier Mena from Cuba, and Jose Figueroa from Puerto Rico.

Additionally, De Grasse will be joined by fellow Canadians Marco Arop and Mitton at the Final. Arop, who placed third last year and won bronze at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, will compete in the 800 meters. Mitton, despite losing her Diamond League Final victory due to a technicality, continues to showcase her talent in shot put.

The Weltklasse Zürich meet also witnessed record-breaking performances in the hurdles, with Alison dos Santos and Masai Russell setting new world records in the men’s 400m hurdles and women’s 100m hurdles, respectively. Dos Santos broke the previous record held by Karsten Warholm, while Russell surpassed Tobi Amusan’s mark. Both athletes displayed exceptional form and determination in their races, solidifying their positions as world-class hurdlers.

The Diamond League Final promises to be a thrilling event with top athletes like De Grasse, Arop, and Mitton aiming for podium finishes and more record-breaking performances on the track.
