Thousands of individuals, including tourists, were evacuated from Crete today due to wildfires that led to the unfortunate deaths of three firefighters in Greece. Two firefighters lost their lives on the island while battling a fire near Krya Vrysi in the Rethymno region, with a third firefighter perishing on the Greek mainland near Gytheio in the Peloponnese.
Strong gusts reaching 125km/h (77mph) prompted the evacuation of around 8,000 people from their residences overnight on the island, but they were later permitted to return. Meanwhile, in France, wildfires forced George and Amal Clooney to evacuate their home in Brignoles.
Expressing uncertainty about the fate of their residence during this crisis, George Clooney mentioned that he and Amal are dedicated to aiding the community post the natural disaster. The couple, along with their twins, Ella and Alexander, relocated to France permanently in 2021 and were granted French citizenship in December.
Numerous European countries, including Greece, France, Spain, and Turkey, are battling severe fires and drought conditions. In Spain and Portugal, fires are ongoing, although Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared an end to the national emergency for wildfires in certain regions. In France, residents in Gironde were able to return home following a major wildfire.
The wildfire in Crete, which emerged in the Rethymno region, continues to devastate homes and agricultural land, remaining one of the largest fires on the island. Evacuees in Rethymno were relocated to temporary shelters, with British tourist Peter Wood describing the situation as frightening due to visible flames in the hills above the village.
Hellenic Fire Service chief Theodoros Vagias expressed condolences for the fallen firefighters and identified them as Emmanouil Stratidakis, 58, and Pantelis Diamantakis, 25. In Spain, a tragic incident in the AlmerÃa region resulted in the death of 14 individuals, including citizens from various countries. Additionally, fires are ablaze in Portugal’s Vila Real district.
As the fires continue to pose challenges across Europe, efforts are underway to contain and manage the ongoing emergency situations.
