VAT reduction on electricity bills is set to begin in October, providing financial relief for numerous households. Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasized the positive impact of this move on people’s finances and overall optimism.
Recent increases in energy bills, influenced by conflicts in the Middle East, have heightened concerns about rising costs throughout the upcoming winter.
The anticipated VAT cut is projected to save the average household approximately £45 based on the current Ofgem price cap. Savings will vary based on individual energy consumption, with high electricity users benefiting the most.
Despite the VAT reduction, energy analysts caution that persistent pressure on wholesale prices, driven by Middle East tensions, is likely to keep the Ofgem price cap elevated.
Richard Neudegg, director of regulation at Uswitch.com, highlighted that the VAT cut could offset potential price hikes, as some suppliers predict a 5% increase in the next price cap update.
Energy expert Martin Lewis also pointed out that the expected rise in the energy price cap in October could diminish the VAT cut’s impact over a six-month period, especially considering further predicted increases in January.
The Ofgem price cap, which recently rose by approximately 13%, is scheduled for another adjustment in October, with the current annual cap for typical households paying by direct debit standing at £1,663.
Energy suppliers are expected to pass on the VAT reduction to all customers, including those on fixed tariffs. Fixed energy tariffs lock in set unit prices for gas and electricity over a specific period, in contrast to the regularly updated price cap rates.
The government’s decision to eliminate VAT on energy bills, currently set at 5%, is estimated to cost £850 million. This initiative will be partly funded by redirecting resources from the discontinued digital ID project spearheaded by Keir Starmer.
Prime Minister Burnham and Chancellor John Healey emphasized the immediate relief provided by the energy tax cut, aiming to alleviate financial burdens on families and boost confidence heading into the winter season.
