Beluga Whales Rescued from Canadian Theme Park

A group of thirty beluga whales that were stranded at a closed theme park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, have been saved from the possibility of euthanasia. The whales have been residing at Marineland since 2024 but are now slated for relocation to aquariums in the United States and Spain. The move was approved by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration last week, pending veterinary evaluations. Teams from the US facilities will soon assess the whales and coordinate the transfer.

Belugas, a protected species known for their social and inquisitive nature, are typically found in the Arctic Ocean. They are recognized for their vocal communication skills, including clicks, whistles, and mimicking other sounds. The whales will be distributed among five aquariums, with two going to Spain’s Oceanogràfic València and the rest to facilities in the US, such as SeaWorld, Georgia Aquarium, and Shedd Aquarium.

Upon clearance from Canadian veterinarians, the belugas will be escorted to their new homes by aquarium experts. The animals will benefit from varied seafood diets, high-quality surroundings with ensured water quality, and access to on-site medical care. In a positive development, a humpback whale named “Timmy,” stranded off Germany’s coast for five weeks, was successfully rescued and transported to the North Sea with the help of a special barge. The rescue operation was hailed as a successful example of marine conservation efforts.
