A young lady experienced a sudden medical emergency during a vacation with her friends in Magaluf after being administered a date-rape substance. Taylor Coulter, an 18-year-old, journeyed to the resort town in Spain on June 16 to commemorate the completion of her high school studies. Unfortunately, her trip took a distressing turn when an individual intentionally injected her with GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) while at a nightclub on the Magaluf Strip.
GHB is a potent depressant of the central nervous system often misused as a date-rape drug. Taylor, a player for Greenock Morton Women’s FC, collapsed onto a friend on the dance floor of the Bananas nightclub shortly after being injected. She experienced symptoms like vomiting, impaired vision, speech difficulties, and loss of mobility.
Taylor recounted the unsettling encounter, mentioning the sharp pain and cold sensation following the injection. She expressed gratitude for her friends’ quick actions in getting her back to safety. Subsequently, she was rushed to her hotel and later to a hospital via ambulance, where medical professionals confirmed the presence of GHB in her system.
Following treatment, which included intravenous fluids and antibiotics, Taylor underwent testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections due to the method of administration. After being discharged the next day, she reported the incident to local authorities before returning to her home in Scotland.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Taylor expressed ongoing physical and emotional challenges, emphasizing the impact on her confidence and daily life. Her father, Stuart, highlighted the dangers faced by individuals, particularly young women, in social settings and urged vigilance to prevent similar incidents.
In a cautionary message to others, Taylor advised vigilance, emphasizing the importance of staying with trusted companions, safeguarding drinks, and seeking immediate help if suspicious of drink tampering. Authorities from the Foreign Office reiterated the need for awareness and precaution against drink spiking while traveling abroad.
Efforts to obtain a response from Bananas nightclub regarding the incident are ongoing.
