“Chef Kerridge Backs Andy Burnham’s VAT Cut for Hospitality Sector”

Renowned chef Tom Kerridge expressed optimism about the potential for Andy Burnham to reduce VAT for pubs and restaurants if he becomes Prime Minister. Kerridge disclosed that he had discussions with Burnham’s team regarding lowering the tax burden on hospitality businesses, a move supported by the former Mayor of Manchester.

The industry is increasingly hopeful that a VAT cut may be on the horizon, with Burnham anticipated to take over from Keir Starmer next month. Kerridge emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue to ensure Burnham stays committed to the cause, citing Burnham’s strong support for the hospitality sector as vital for community well-being.

Acknowledging the Mirror’s impactful “Your Pub Needs You” initiative, Kerridge lauded the campaign for advocating industry support. The hospitality sector advocates for a VAT reduction from 20% to 10% to alleviate financial pressures and align the UK with international standards.

Despite the sector’s plea for relief, the Treasury raises concerns over a potential loss of over £10 billion in tax revenue if VAT is halved. Tax expert Dan Neidle criticized the proposed move, arguing it would disproportionately benefit large corporations like McDonald’s, with a significant portion of the hospitality industry already exempt from VAT.

Kerridge defended the VAT reduction, dismissing the £10 billion figure as a mere statistic. He emphasized the potential for reinvestment in businesses and saving struggling enterprises from closure, highlighting the importance of sustainable growth in the sector.

While acknowledging that major corporations stand to gain from the tax cut, Kerridge stressed the significance of supporting local businesses like pubs and independent restaurants. He emphasized that halving VAT could be a lifeline for many hospitality establishments in the current challenging environment.

A recent survey by industry bodies revealed a growing number of businesses operating at a loss, underscoring the urgent need for financial relief. Nick Mackenzie of Greene King indicated that any savings from a VAT reduction would likely be reinvested in business operations rather than passed on to customers, emphasizing the necessity for businesses to survive and thrive.

Greene King’s ownership by billionaire Li Ka-shing’s conglomerate highlights the diverse landscape of the hospitality industry, with Mackenzie emphasizing the importance of providing breathing space for small businesses to ensure future growth and economic stability. The potential for increased tax revenues and job creation through business sustainability was also highlighted as a critical aspect of the VAT reduction debate.
