Kate Howson initially mistook an itchy red patch on her back for a rash caused by carrying a rucksack while on holiday, but later discovered it was a significant revelation. Alongside her partner Rhys, the 32-year-old from Cardiff had the opportunity to attend two destination weddings in New Zealand and Thailand in February 2024. Opting for a work sabbatical, they embarked on a travel adventure coinciding with the wedding celebrations.
During their travels, Kate noticed an itch around a mole on her back, where her partner observed a redness in the surrounding area. Attributing it to friction from her backpack during their extended journey, she shared a photo with her sister-in-law, a doctor, who advised getting it checked upon their return.
Upon coming back in March, Kate noticed the area had darkened and changed shape. Comparing new photos with the original, she visited her GP who referred her to the dermatology department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Specialists there indicated a high possibility of the growth being cancerous, leading to the removal of the mole, subsequently confirmed as melanoma.
Further medical evaluations prompted a sentinel lymph node biopsy to track potential cancer spread paths. The results revealed the cancer had progressed from stage two to stage three, underscoring the severity of the situation. Kate’s treatment journey included exploring options at Velindre, where targeted cancer drugs were recommended due to her BRAF mutation.
Facing concerns about fertility implications, Kate and Rhys pursued IVF treatments before her melanoma therapy began in April. Despite challenges with low egg reserves and unsuccessful fertilization attempts, they remained resilient, seeking support from Tenovus Cancer Care’s counseling services. Reflecting on the emotional toll, Kate emphasized the unexpected fertility struggles as a significant hardship in their cancer journey.
As a research partnership manager at Social Care Wales, Kate’s professional role centers on connecting practitioners with academics and shaping storytelling frameworks. Utilizing her own experiences to highlight the power of personal narratives, she shared her story to inspire and raise awareness.
