A mother grieving the loss of her 15-year-old son, who tragically drowned in a river, is urging families to have a crucial conversation with their children about water safety. It has been nearly five years since Thandolwethu Ndlovu, affectionately known as Thando, lost his life in the River Trent. Described by his mother, Nombulelo Ndlovu, as a loving and charismatic boy, Thando’s memory continues to bring joy to those who knew him.
Nombulelo, a supporter of the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam water safety campaign,’ emphasized Thando’s positive impact on others and highlighted the importance of discussing water safety with children. Recent data has shown that children of Black or Black British ethnicity face a higher risk of drowning compared to their White counterparts, with many lacking essential knowledge about water safety.
Reflecting on her own experience, Nombulelo admitted to not discussing open water dangers with Thando, assuming that swimming in rivers was uncommon in the UK. She now advocates for parents and teenagers to understand the risks associated with open water activities to prevent similar tragedies. The Black Swimming Association has also stressed the need for heightened awareness, especially among parents of Black boys, regarding water safety education.
Nombulelo emphasized the lack of attention given to water safety conversations in Black households and called for a cultural shift towards prioritizing these discussions. Tragically, Thando’s drowning incident occurred during a summer outing with friends, underscoring the critical importance of proper water safety education and supervision.
In her advocacy efforts, Nombulelo urges parents, authorities, and communities to take proactive steps in educating children about the dangers of open water. She emphasized the need for governmental intervention to incorporate water safety education into school curricula and stressed the role parents play in fostering a safe environment for children. By openly discussing water safety and supporting children in acquiring relevant skills, families can prevent future tragedies.
Since her son’s passing, Nombulelo has been actively raising awareness about water safety, collaborating with local authorities to share her family’s story and promote preventive measures. She encourages individuals to watch a video documenting Thando’s story, including the distressing 999 call made during the incident, with the hope of preventing similar accidents and honoring her son’s memory.
