Roger Clarke, an elderly individual known as an OAP drugs mule, has been released from prison in Portugal and has flown to Costa Blanca in Spain for a vacation. He was imprisoned in Portugal for involvement in trafficking £1 million worth of cocaine from the Caribbean along with his late wife, Susan. After Susan’s death from cancer in a Lisbon prison cell, Roger was extradited to the UK in 2021. He recently claimed he should have been released in December 2022, halfway through his eight-year sentence, during a day release from prison.
Following his complaints, prison authorities transferred him from an open prison cell to a closed maximum security facility. However, he is now reported to be free and enjoying the sunny weather in Spain, where he previously resided with Susan. In a Facebook post, Roger mentioned that he traveled to Rojales in Spain’s Alicante, which is a short distance away from Guardamar del Segura, where he used to live before his imprisonment for drug-related offenses.
It has been disclosed that Roger spent a significant amount of time behind bars, which has had a toll on him. Despite this, he seems undeterred by his past and is currently holidaying in Spain. In the past, Roger and Susan were regular patrons at the Med Bistro & Bar in El Raso, where they were active members of the golf society and enjoyed playing rounds of golf.
Roger has denied his involvement in the cocaine smuggling scheme, attributing the situation to his own misjudgment. He expressed regret over the consequences of his actions and indicated plans to seek human rights compensation for alleged false imprisonment. Roger emphasized that he bears the responsibility for the events that transpired and lamented the loss of his wife, Susan.
Clarke’s past legal entanglements include being caught smuggling cannabis worth £1 million into Norway as part of an organized criminal group. After their arrest in Oslo in 2004, he and Susan evaded legal repercussions by returning to the UK, where they assumed new identities and lived in sheltered housing. However, a local newspaper photograph led to their arrest and extradition to Norway, resulting in their imprisonment in 2011.
Roger Clarke’s journey from drug smuggling to imprisonment and now to a brief period of freedom in Spain highlights the complexities and consequences of illicit activities.
