A father tragically bled to death while sleeping on a bench after accidentally being stabbed by a knife he had stored in his backpack. The incident involving Robert Brown, 57, led to a significant murder investigation when his body was discovered beside a canal footpath in Northampton. Brown, who had last been seen at a supermarket, was found by a passing cyclist who noticed blood seeping through the bench.
Authorities initially suspected foul play due to the nature of the incident, prompting extensive searches and the arrest of three individuals on suspicion of murder. However, subsequent investigations revealed that the death was likely a result of a freak accident. An inquest disclosed that Brown had rolled onto the knife in his backpack while in a deep sleep, causing it to penetrate his clothing and inflict a fatal wound on his arm.
