A Saudi physician has been handed a life sentence for driving a rented BMW into a Christmas market in Germany, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, aged 51, faced trial at the state court in November following the tragic incident on December 20, 2024, in the city of Magdeburg, Germany. The attack claimed the lives of five women and a young boy, leaving many others injured.
The entire event unfolded in just over a minute using a rented BMW X3, which accelerated to speeds of approximately 30mph during the rampage. The court deemed the 51-year-old to bear “particularly serious” responsibility, as reported by German news agency dpa.
His life sentence signifies that he will not be eligible for parole after the typical 15-year period in Germany. Investigations revealed that al-Abdulmohsen was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Authorities stated that his actions appeared motivated by dissatisfaction with the outcome of a legal conflict and the failure of multiple criminal complaints. The perpetrator acted alone in planning the attack.
Officials emphasized that the individual did not match the typical profile of extremist attackers. He identified himself as a former Muslim critical of Islam, expressing support for far-right ideologies on social media.
While al-Abdulmohsen had no prior history of violence, authorities had previously flagged him for threatening behavior. The Magdeburg tragedy was part of a series of assaults involving immigrants that brought migration issues to the forefront of Germany’s national election campaign in February 2025.
The defendant arrived in Germany in 2006 and had been granted permanent residency status.
