The younger sibling of one of the victims in the Nottingham attacks expressed how the tragic event drastically aged him. Charlie Webber, who was 15 at the time his brother Barnaby was killed by Valdo Calocane, now aims to embody more of his brother’s qualities.
The public was shocked when three individuals lost their lives in Nottingham due to a man diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Charlie recounted the moment he learned about the fatal incident three years ago when he returned from a school trip. At just 15 years old, he was informed by a teacher that his parents were on their way to pick him up.
Upon hearing the news, Charlie felt a sudden shift in his world. The presence of news crews outside their home signified the beginning of his sudden maturity.
Describing his brother as his “hero” and “best friend,” Charlie revealed how Barnaby and another student, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, were fatally stabbed while returning home from a night out. The victims, including school caretaker Ian Coates, were attacked by Calocane, who was later found guilty of manslaughter and attempted murder.
Now 18, Charlie recently completed his A-level exams and has been accepted to study history at Cardiff University, the same field his brother was passionate about. Expressing his desire to pursue a career in law conversion, he reflected on turning 19, the age his brother was when he passed away, acknowledging the perpetual grief but also the fragility and beauty of life.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Charlie, alongside his family, has actively participated in the Barnaby Webber Foundation to support young individuals facing life challenges. He emphasized the importance of staying safe and making thoughtful decisions to avoid causing further pain to his parents.
Despite the ongoing sorrow, Charlie finds solace in cherishing the good moments and memories shared with his brother. One of his fondest recollections is a car journey they took together shortly before Barnaby’s demise, a conversation that remains etched in his heart.
Charlie’s unwavering commitment to honoring his brother’s legacy through positivity and resilience showcases his strength and determination in the face of adversity.
