Three children and an adult lost their lives following a tragic incident where a car collided with a group of cyclists in a rural area of the Netherlands. The cyclists, who were on a school trip, were hit by the vehicle near the village of Vogelwaarde, close to the Belgian border, according to Dutch authorities.
Authorities detained a 19-year-old individual for investigation into the incident, although they did not confirm whether he was the driver of the car. The collision resulted in the immediate deaths of two children and an adult at the scene, while four children sustained severe injuries and were transported to hospitals in the Netherlands and nearby Belgium.
One of the injured children sadly passed away on Thursday evening at a hospital in Rotterdam, as reported by the Zeeland Security Region organization. The victims were part of a group consisting of 14 schoolchildren and two supervisors from an elementary school in the nearby town of Axel.
An ongoing police investigation aims to determine the cause of the collision on a provincial road situated amidst farmers’ fields near the small town of Vogelwaarde, approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Amsterdam.
