The incident occurred as firefighters were responding to a reported gas leak, causing a blast that impacted nearby residences. Additionally, five individuals sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment, as confirmed by Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesperson Jason Evans.
The exact number of residents residing in the two-story building in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas remains unknown. The massive fire generated a plume of black smoke visible from a considerable distance. Evans expressed concerns about the possibility of discovering more victims as emergency crews continued their meticulous search through the charred structure. By late Thursday, firefighters had only examined a portion of the scene by hand, with some areas necessitating excavation due to the extensive damage.
The explosion occurred while firefighters were en route to address the gas leak. Dallas Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Mark Berry noted that despite their prompt response, the explosion had already occurred. Atmos Energy, a natural gas provider, disclosed that a pipeline near the site had been damaged by a construction crew not affiliated with the company.
One resident, Kacee Proctor, revealed that her mother had detected a gas odor inside the building a day before the incident. Although she was not present during the explosion, Proctor expressed deep distress over her cat being trapped inside. Natural gas service to the area was temporarily suspended, and company representatives collaborated with investigators on site to assess the situation.
Authorities established a family reunification center at a nearby high school to assist individuals in locating their loved ones. Frances Rizo, a concerned individual, was attempting to contact her friend who resided in the affected building, expressing worry as her friend remained unresponsive.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as flames and dark smoke engulfed the area. Firefighters diligently worked to extinguish the fire and search for any potential survivors amidst the debris.
