“Wales Wildfire Evacuation: Teen’s Terrifying Escape”

A frightened teenager recounted the harrowing experience when a massive wildfire neared her family’s residence. Elvie Drinkwater, 16, was one of the residents instructed to evacuate their homes in Capelulo, Conwy, as a significant incident unfolded due to a rapidly spreading wildfire on Conwy Mountain in Wales. Elvie vividly remembered the tense moments before their evacuation, mentioning that she could hear and smell the approaching fire even though the flames were not visible.

Describing the unsettling sounds, Elvie said, “You could hear it, you could smell it, but you couldn’t see it. It sounded like cracking, like popcorn in the microwave… crunching.” Authorities had advised Elvie’s family on Sunday morning to pack essential items in case the grass fire reached their vicinity. The family left in a state of panic, uncertain if they would ever return home.

The GCSE student initially thought the fire was distant from their home and later regretted not being better prepared for a sudden departure. She expressed her feelings, saying, “Knowing that there’s like so many things I want to bring with me, and I just can’t go back.” She also voiced her fears about the uncertainty of the situation and the possibility of losing their home.

After enduring hours of anxiety, the family received news that their home had been spared from the fire. However, it took another two days before Elvie, her mother, and her partner could return. Their dog, Marley, had to stay elsewhere during the evacuation as pets were not allowed at the hotel where the family sought shelter.

Despite the terrifying experience, Elvie expressed confidence in the firefighters’ capabilities to manage the situation, stating, “The firefighters did have a good handle on the situation.” Returning home revealed the heartbreaking sight of charred fields and trees. Elvie reflected on the loss, “It was really sad driving down the pass and seeing all the devastation. We moved here in 2021, and we did choose this house because of all the natural beauty, everything surrounding us, and now it’s all gone.”

Although the major incident in Conwy has been resolved, firefighters continued to combat multiple active fires on Tuesday evening.
