Jon Venables, the perpetrator of the tragic murder of James Bulger, is attempting to prevent the victim’s parents from being present at his upcoming parole hearing. Venables, now 43 years old, received approval for a new hearing last year. Despite James Bulger’s parents, Ralph, 59, and Denise, 57, being granted permission to attend the review, Venables has contested their participation.
The Bulger family has been readying themselves for the hearing since August, but Venables’ challenge has delayed the proceedings. The parole hearing, which was expected to feature impact statements from the Bulger family, is now anticipated to occur no earlier than September.
A source expressed that the situation has added further distress to James’ family, raising questions about who the real victims are – the family or the individual who committed the heinous crime. The family has been enduring this ordeal for over a year, but they remain steadfast in their fight for justice.
Venables, who infamously abducted and murdered two-year-old James Bulger in 1993, has declared that he will refuse to participate in the hearing if James’ parents are present. Despite being granted lifelong anonymity, Venables would provide testimony from behind a screen during the review.
In a previous parole hearing in November 2023, Venables did not appear in person, citing concerns about his mental well-being if faced with the victim’s family. The Parole Board subsequently deemed him ineligible for release in December of the same year due to the continued threat he poses to children.
The Mirror has reached out to the Parole Board for a statement.
