The United Nations made a significant decision on Friday to move away from the outdated Mercator global map, which has been in use since the 16th century. The resolution was introduced by African nations to address the misrepresentation of countries’ true sizes, particularly to combat the perception that Africa is marginalized.
Togo spearheaded the initiative as part of the African Union’s campaign to reduce the reliance on the Mercator map, known for distorting the actual sizes of land masses by exaggerating those closer to the poles. For instance, it falsely depicts Greenland as being similar in size to Africa, despite Africa being approximately 14 times larger.
In a statement to Reuters before the vote, Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey emphasized the importance of using a fair map for a fair world. The resolution advocates for the adoption of the Equal Earth projection, which offers a more accurate representation of continent sizes.
Although the resolution is not legally binding, it does not dispute the continued use of the Mercator projection for maritime and aerial navigation, where it remains suitable. The resolution was passed in the UN General Assembly with overwhelming support, receiving 164 votes in favor, one against (from the United States), and six abstentions.
Togo aims to update its educational materials by the end of the year to reflect the Equal Earth projection in school maps. Dussey expressed Togo’s commitment to lead by example and encourage other countries, educational institutions, international bodies, and tech companies to transition away from the outdated Mercator map.
Furthermore, Togo plans to collaborate with African Union members and global allies in the next six months to facilitate broader adoption of the Equal Earth projection. Dussey stressed that this initiative aligns with Africa’s broader agenda to address colonial legacies and is not intended as an affront to any specific region or civilization.
Dussey concluded by highlighting that the world is evolving, and it is essential for maps to evolve with it to provide accurate representations of countries and continents.
