Ukraine has executed an extensive cross-border assault deep into Russia, targeting Moscow’s largest oil refinery and key military installations in one of its most significant offensives to date. The drone strikes carried out in the early hours are set to severely impact Russia’s energy sector and disrupt essential supplies to the Russian capital.
This offensive coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s imminent meeting with US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit in France to discuss potential peace negotiations. Following the attack on Moscow’s energy infrastructure, President Zelensky characterized the mission as a retaliation for previous Russian aggressions against Ukrainian civilians, emphasizing the necessity to end the ongoing conflict.
The assault on Moscow’s oil refinery led to immediate restrictions on petrol purchases, with payments limited to cash transactions and passenger car fuel purchases capped at 30 liters. The refinery, responsible for nearly half of Moscow’s daily oil consumption, had been diverting resources to support Russian military operations in Ukraine.
In addition to the refinery, another oil facility in southern Russia was targeted, further undermining Putin’s position amid growing discontent. The attack also inflicted damage on Russian troops stationed across various regions, showcasing Ukraine’s strategic capabilities in undermining Russian military positions.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian drone teams launched strikes on the Kremlin’s military outposts in Donetsk, targeting critical supply depots and troop concentrations. These coordinated efforts are part of Ukraine’s continued pressure on Russia to cease hostilities and end the prolonged conflict.
The recent offensive by Ukraine poses a significant challenge to Putin’s ability to sustain the war in Ukraine financially, intensifying calls for a resolution to the prolonged conflict. These developments follow the recent interception of a sanctioned Russian oil vessel by British commandos in the Channel, underscoring the escalating tensions in the region.
Both Presidents Putin and Zelensky engaged in discussions with Trump ahead of the US leader’s birthday celebrations, highlighting the international attention on the escalating situation in Eastern Europe.
