Fresh heat health alerts have been issued for three regions in the UK over the next 52 hours, with the Government cautioning about a “greater risk to life” for vulnerable individuals. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced yellow alerts for the East of England, London, and the South East starting from Thursday, May 28 at 4 pm until Saturday, May 30 at 8 pm.
According to the UKHSA, these alerts indicate potential impacts on health and social care services in the upcoming days, posing a higher risk to vulnerable individuals and an increased demand for healthcare services. The agency also mentioned that indoor spaces are more likely to experience elevated temperatures during this period.
Moreover, the UKHSA has highlighted the possibility of an uptick in water-related incidents, including dangers associated with cold-water shock and drowning. This alert follows recent amber warnings that were in effect last week for the Midlands, Eastern, and South Eastern England but were lifted on May 28 at 5 pm.
Notably, the UKHSA expressed concern over the necessity to issue such warnings early in the year. On Tuesday, the UK experienced record-breaking temperatures for the second consecutive day, reaching 35°C at Heathrow and Kew Gardens, as reported by the Met Office. The forecast indicates continued warmth, especially in the southeast, with temperatures potentially reaching 32°C on Thursday before gradually decreasing to around 28°C on Friday due to diminishing high-pressure effects.
