US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Iran, vowing a strong response following a contentious exchange where he referred to Tehran as ‘scum’ and declared an end to the ceasefire.
During the NATO conference in Turkey, Trump launched a scathing attack on Iran, which reportedly faced at least 85 US airstrikes overnight in a significant escalation of hostilities. The strikes targeted locations including Qeshm island, Bandar Abbas, and Sirik, resulting in injuries to civilians from shrapnel. In response, Iran claimed to have launched attacks on a US Navy headquarters and an air base in Kuwait.
An intelligence analyst from the UK expressed that the recent attacks on Iranian targets were notably larger and more forceful than previous incidents, signaling a shift towards heightened aggression. Despite Trump’s aggressive stance, there are indications that he may be feeling unsettled by the situation. American forces in the region carried out missile strikes on key Iranian locations, such as Bandar Abbas, after Iranian troops attacked three oil and gas tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz on the Omani side, under the command of Iran’s Islamic Republican Guard Corps.
Tehran has insisted that vessels must navigate the Strait using the Iranian-controlled side and has asserted its authority over traffic in the region. Trump condemned Iran’s actions, emphasizing the prevention of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. He expressed frustration with Iranian officials, labeling them as ‘scum’ and ‘liars,’ while criticizing the futility of negotiations with them.
Trump shared his skepticism about the peace negotiation process with Iran, stating that agreements reached in talks are often denied by Iranian officials in subsequent public statements. He also criticized Iran’s behavior, referencing an incident where the US permitted a funeral procession for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, only to face Iranian aggression shortly after.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Iran has threatened to exert control over global oil trade passing through the Strait of Hormuz, potentially disrupting it if faced with further attacks from the US. The Fars News agency, closely linked to the IRGC, issued a statement warning of dire consequences for US and allied interests in the event of renewed aggression.
As tensions escalate between the US and Iran, the situation remains volatile, with both sides engaging in aggressive rhetoric and actions that raise concerns about the potential for further conflict.
