Six individuals have been apprehended by Donald Trump for allegedly causing damage to the $14 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The ongoing issues with the refurbishment have cast a shadow over America’s upcoming 250th anniversary festivities, as stated by the US president attributing the vandalism to the deteriorating state of the pool following its costly overhaul.
In a social media announcement, Trump highlighted a significant 350-foot gash in the fresh paintwork, indicating that the federal government would unveil images showcasing the supposed destruction. The restoration project involved draining the century-old Reflecting Pool and painting its base a hue Trump named “American flag blue.” However, the initiative has encountered challenges such as algae blooms and noticeable peeling of the new coating from the pool’s bottom.
Trump has persistently linked the peeling paint and poor craftsmanship at the Reflecting Pool to malicious acts, although no concrete evidence has been presented to support these assertions. Describing the damage as purposeful and criminal, he alleged that individuals had exerted considerable effort under the cover of darkness to create the current condition. Additionally, Trump claimed that a sharp object, possibly a knife or razors, had inflicted numerous slashes along a 350-foot stretch of the pool.
The Associated Press verified the arrest of a man who touched the peeling paint out of curiosity but promptly let go when instructed by a park worker. Following Trump’s claims of vandalism, National Guard members and Park Police have increased surveillance in the area. Trump mentioned that the Department of the Interior would disclose photos and videos depicting the alleged vandalism.
Addressing reporters upon his arrival in Pennsylvania, Trump made unfounded allegations about potential tampering with the pool, including suggestions of adding fertilizer to induce algae growth. Despite assertions, no proof of such actions has been substantiated. Workers have been observed pouring hydrogen peroxide into the pool to combat the algae, a measure that experts warn may inadvertently act as a paint remover. The dark lining of the pool could also be exacerbating the algae issue by absorbing more sunlight and elevating water temperatures.
