The Canadian equestrian community is in mourning following a tragic incident in British Columbia that claimed the lives of three horses. The horses, on their way from Manitoba and Alberta to Langley for the 2026 Equestrian Canada National Dressage West championship at the Thunderbird Show Park, met with an unfortunate accident on Highway 1, approximately 40 kilometers east of Revelstoke.
The collision, involving a single-vehicle carrying four horses, occurred at 8:45 a.m. local time on Oct. 6. The driver, a 73-year-old woman from Langdon, Alberta, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a rock wall. Sadly, three horses perished in the accident, while the fourth sustained injuries.
Emergency responders from B.C. Highway Patrol and B.C. Emergency Health Services swiftly arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance. The driver, who received a violation ticket for failing to keep right under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act, was reported to be in stable condition after being transported to the hospital.
The devastating loss has deeply impacted the equestrian community, with an outpouring of condolences and support coming from across Canada. Mackenzie Abbott, a dressage rider and head trainer from Headingley, Manitoba, expressed profound sorrow over the loss of two horses, Fearless and Rosaria, that she had trained and were owned by Solace Stables.
Abbott, who was eagerly awaiting the horses’ participation in the Langley competition, described the horses as top performers in Manitoba’s equestrian scene. The tragic incident has left her and others devastated, as they had invested efforts and resources into showcasing the horses’ talents at the event.
Equestrian Canada, the organizing body behind the competition, has offered mental health support to those affected by the tragedy. James Hood, the chief of staff with Equestrian Canada, emphasized the importance of unity and support within the equestrian community during this difficult time, urging everyone to come together and navigate through the loss.
As the community grapples with the heartbreaking loss of the beloved horses, efforts are underway to provide assistance and comfort to those impacted by the unfortunate incident.
