According to Counter Terrorism Police, individuals as young as 15 have been apprehended for serving as proxies for foreign nations. Authorities caution that young people are being lured by countries like China, Russia, and Iran due to their affordability and dispensability. National Coordinator Vicki Evans emphasized the alarming trend of using proxies, stating that the public should be vigilant.
Evans highlighted that proxies come from diverse backgrounds and may not realize they are being manipulated. She emphasized that recruitment can occur in various settings, including workplaces and homes, with no regard for geographical boundaries.
Addressing young individuals who act as proxies, Evans warned them that they would face legal consequences alone, without the support of those who recruited them. She noted that recent convictions have resulted in over 50 years of imprisonment for offenders, emphasizing the severe penalties they face.
Following the approval of the National Security (State Threats) Bill, Evans spoke at a press briefing, where she discussed the new legislation that grants the Home Secretary enhanced powers to safeguard the public from threats posed by individuals and groups engaged in hostile activities for foreign states.

The new powers granted by the legislation aim to disrupt and deter hostile activities, empowering law enforcement and intelligence agencies to combat foreign interference and protect democratic values.
