After 18 months of extensive work, a massive sinkhole that appeared on a high street in Surrey has finally been filled, allowing the reopening of Godstone High Street. The sinkhole, which emerged suddenly on February 17, 2025, led to the evacuation of around 30 homes and disrupted businesses in the area.
Following the collapse, engineers discovered a complex network of 19th-century mining tunnels beneath the street, necessitating thorough safety measures before the repair process could begin. Approximately 1,100 tonnes of grout were utilized to stabilize the underground structures and replace damaged water pipes. The road and pavements were then reconstructed, leading to the recent reopening of the high street.
Local residents, including Holly Harrington, expressed relief and joy at the street’s reopening, highlighting the inconvenience and challenges they faced during the closure period. Matt Furniss of Surrey County Council commended the community for their patience and emphasized the council’s commitment to ensuring the safety and stability of the area for residents and commuters.
SES Water also played a crucial role in the restoration efforts by replacing damaged water mains, contributing to the successful reopening of the High Street. Residents and businesses were acknowledged for their understanding and cooperation throughout the essential repair works.
Toria Willson, a resident impacted by the closure, described the past year as challenging due to the disruptions caused by the sinkhole. However, with the completion of the repair and restoration works, normalcy has returned to Godstone High Street, bringing relief to the local community.
