A surgeon has been removed from the medical register after a botched operation resulted in life-threatening complications for a patient. Dr Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman, a locum surgeon with the NHS, performed a bowel procedure that went awry, causing the patient’s bowels to reconnect incorrectly, posing a severe risk to his life.
The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) heard that due to the surgeon’s mistake, the patient’s digestive system was compromised, leading to a dangerous situation where his bowels emptied back into his stomach instead of progressing normally. The patient experienced excruciating pain following the surgery and required emergency intervention by another surgeon to correct the error and save his life.
Despite concerns raised by the patient’s family and other medical professionals, Dr Rahman failed to acknowledge any surgical errors. An expert witness from the General Medical Council described Dr Rahman’s procedure as unprecedented and characterized his mistake as one of the most severe.
Following the incident at the Royal Oldham Hospital in August 2020, Dr Rahman, who graduated from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, faced accusations of negligence but denied responsibility, claiming he was unfairly targeted and subjected to unwarranted criticism.
The MPTS had previously restricted Dr Rahman’s practice, but he violated these restrictions by accepting a locum position at Affidea Express Care Clinic in Ireland in February 2022. This breach of the imposed order was considered an aggravating factor by the tribunal, highlighting Dr Rahman’s disregard for professional standards.
Consequently, the tribunal determined that Dr Rahman’s actions were incompatible with maintaining his registration as a doctor, leading to his removal from the medical register. This decision followed a series of serious errors in surgery and post-operative care, making it clear that Dr Rahman’s misconduct warranted severe consequences.
