Severe weather conditions are expected in six regions on Wednesday, with heavy showers, thunderstorms, and hail posing risks of power outages and flash floods.
The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for thunderstorms, cautioning that strong winds, floodwater, lightning strikes, and hail could cause damage to buildings.
Effective from 10 am to 9 pm tomorrow, the warning covers parts of northern Scotland, where heavy, slow-moving showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop, potentially resulting in 20-30mm of rain in 1-2 hours and up to 50mm in some areas over 3-6 hours.
The forecast also warns of localized flash flooding and disruptions to the transport network due to the slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms.
Apart from property damage, the Met Office highlights the risk of challenging driving conditions, road closures, travel delays, and potential cancellations of train and bus services. The agency also mentions the possibility of power cuts affecting some homes and businesses.
To prepare for the adverse weather, individuals are advised to secure outdoor items, gather essential supplies like torches and mobile phone power packs, and be cautious of the potential hazards.
The regions of Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, and Highlands & Eilean Siar are expected to be significantly impacted by the weather conditions. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland is also under a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms until 9 pm, with possible disruptions to travel and outdoor activities.
In contrast, firefighters in England and Wales are battling wildfires amid high temperatures and drought conditions, with no precipitation in sight. Wales and half of England are currently experiencing drought conditions.
