“Stepmother convicted 47 years later in tragic scalding death”

A young girl tragically passed away following severe burns from being immersed in scalding water by her stepmother. Janice Nix, now 67, was convicted of manslaughter nearly half a century after the incident, which took place in Thornton Heath, south London, in 1978 when Andrea Bernard was just five years old.

The child, who suffered burns to half of her body, pleaded with Nix, saying, “this is too hot, mummy,” before succumbing to her injuries in the hospital five weeks later. Following new information provided by Andrea’s older brother in 2022, the case was reopened, leading to Nix’s recent conviction. The tragedy unfolded during a period where Nix also subjected Andrea’s brother, Desmond Bernard, to assault and ill-treatment between 1975 and 1978.

During the trial, Desmond Bernard revealed the extent of the abuse, detailing how Nix physically assaulted him and his sister, making their lives a living nightmare. Nix, who was primarily responsible for their care due to their father’s absence, was described as imposing strict standards and resorting to violent punishments for minor infractions.

The court heard that on the day of the fatal incident, Nix flew into a rage after Andrea disobeyed her, leading to the horrific outcome in the scalding bath. Despite initially providing false information during the 1978 investigation, Nix later admitted her negligence and the truth emerged during the recent trial.

Nix was arrested in 2025 upon her return to the UK and faced charges of manslaughter and cruelty to a child. The prosecution highlighted the prolonged abuse suffered by the children and commended the courage of Andrea’s brother for coming forward after all these years to seek justice for his sister.
