Xavier Moon had been instrumental in securing the Winnipeg Sea Bears’ last five points, bringing them within two points of clinching the CEBL championship for the first time in the franchise’s history. With 12,519 fans watching at the Canada Life Centre, Moon, a three-time MVP, could have easily taken the winning shot himself during the Target Score Time. However, he opted to pass the ball to DJ Burns, who quickly relayed it to Simon Hildebrandt beyond the three-point line. Hildebrandt nailed the shot, securing the victory for the Sea Bears.
Reflecting on the game-winning moment, Hildebrandt expressed his initial disbelief and the time it took for the reality to sink in. His journey to that point began over three years ago when he was selected as the first overall pick in the Canadian Elite Basketball League’s U Sports draft from the University of Manitoba.
Following his success in the CEBL, including two Developmental Player of the Year awards, Hildebrandt ventured into a two-year NCAA career at High Point and Washington State. He is set to embark on his first professional overseas stint in Germany with BBC Bayreuth in the upcoming season.
For Hildebrandt, the championship-winning shot marked a significant milestone in his career, with more potential milestones on the horizon. His story exemplifies the type of narrative the CEBL aims to nurture as it gears up for its ninth season in 2027, highlighting Canadian talent, particularly homegrown and undiscovered players.
The league’s commitment to opening development pathways is evident in the transition from the draft system to “CEBL Signing Day,” where each team signs two players from Canada’s university and college systems. Hildebrandt emphasized the importance of showcasing the talent in U Sports and providing a pathway for Canadian players to transition to professional basketball through the CEBL.
Looking ahead, Hildebrandt’s basketball journey could align with the national team, a prospect he eagerly anticipates despite not yet playing at the senior level. As he continues to pursue his basketball dreams, Hildebrandt’s dedication and perseverance serve as inspiration for aspiring players within the CEBL and beyond.
