“From Olympic Glory to Live Action: A Filipina Canadian’s Hockey Journey”

Authored by Erlinda Tan, a Filipina Canadian and Edmonton Oilers enthusiast residing in Vancouver, this First Person column delves into her journey as a hockey fan. For more insights into First Person narratives, visit the FAQ.

My introduction to hockey occurred during the 2010 Winter Olympics, where I witnessed the intense final match against the U.S., culminating in Sidney Crosby’s game-winning goal in overtime.

Watching the game with friends on Vancouver Island, I observed the nationwide jubilation as Canada celebrated the victory with honking cars and resounding renditions of O Canada in various public spaces.

Having recently relocated from the Philippines to Canada, where hockey was a novel concept to me, I was amazed at how this sport could unify an entire nation. It was a remarkable demonstration of collective spirit.

Subsequently, my interest in hockey piqued, and amidst the process of settling into my new home, I sporadically tuned in to games on TV. While it didn’t initially captivate me as it did during that historic Olympic moment, hockey seemed to weave itself into my Canadian experience, evident through the ubiquitous hockey jerseys and enthusiastic cheers in my surroundings.

My formal initiation into live hockey occurred in spring 2014 at an Edmonton Oilers versus Anaheim Ducks game, courtesy of a hockey aficionado friend who held season tickets.

Within the raucous atmosphere of Edmonton’s Rexall Place, as the crowd chanted “Let’s gooo Oilers!” and the team secured a victory, I felt a sense of belonging among the exuberant fans. The memories of that game remain vivid in my mind.

Gradually, I realized the profound impact of hockey on the city. Colleagues donning Oilers’ jerseys, the correlation between the team’s performance and office morale, and discussions surrounding the intense “Battle of Alberta” rivalry highlighted the cultural significance of hockey in Canada.

As I delved deeper into hockey culture, I recognized its pervasive influence beyond a mere sport, akin to a revered institution intertwined with Canadian identity. Exploring references like Wayne Gretzky Drive and understanding his legendary status in the sport provided insights into hockey’s revered legacy.

My engagement with televised games grew, with special attention to marquee events like the Battle of Alberta, prompting me to adorn my kitchen with Oilers’ memorabilia, fostering a growing affinity for the sport.

Embracing hockey parallels my assimilation into Canadian society, fostering connections through shared enthusiasm and conversations sparked by the game.

Reviving the Passion

In 2016, a relocation to Vancouver following a job transition prompted a hiatus in my hockey immersion. However, with settled roots in the city by 2018, I met Mike, a fervent hockey supporter, reigniting my fervor for the sport.
