“School Faces Backlash for Banning Socks with Skirts”

Some parents at a Liverpool school are expressing dissatisfaction over a recent uniform policy change that prohibits girls wearing skirts from wearing socks. The King’s Leadership Academy Liverpool in Dingle implemented the new rule to maintain a consistent appearance throughout the school. Under the updated policy, girls must now wear black tights or tailored school trousers instead of socks and keep their hair tied back at all times.

Criticism from parents surfaced on social media, with one questioning the necessity of the rule and another stating their child’s aversion to tights. Principal Scott Cordon defended the decision, stating that the updates aim to establish a more professional and uniform look across the school.

The school’s Student Parliament representatives, who were involved in the discussions about the uniform changes, emphasized the importance of a consistent dress code in fostering a professional learning environment and community cohesion. They clarified that the new expectations, including wearing plain black tights with skirts or opting for tailored trousers, aim to enhance the school’s overall appearance.

Additionally, the requirement for tied-back hair was justified on grounds of professionalism and safety during practical lessons. Student representatives highlighted the importance of a professional image and adherence to school values. They emphasized that clear uniform guidelines reduce confusion, promote fairness, and allow students to focus on their education and future success.

The academy, part of the Great Schools Trust, was recognized as one of the most improved schools in the country last year. The focus remains on promoting a conducive learning environment that prioritizes academic achievement and leadership development.
