Rory McIlroy is taking a brief pause at his newly acquired residence in the UK before heading to the US Open. The world’s No. 2 golfer recently participated in the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, finishing in a tie for 12th place.
Scoring four under par, the 37-year-old is preparing for the third major tournament of the year. However, McIlroy will skip the Canadian Open this week to return to England.
After traveling 3,650 miles from Ohio to Wentworth, McIlroy is spending six days at his new Surrey estate before flying approximately 3,500 miles to Shinnecock Hills, New York, for the US Open.
Opting to spend time at his family home, McIlroy will miss the chance to compete in the Canadian Open, which offers a prize pool of £7.3 million, with the winner receiving £1.3 million.
“I had a couple of weeks off and we settled into our London house for the summer. It was nice to be there for the last 10 days,” McIlroy mentioned before the Memorial Tournament.
The golfer, who acquired the £9 million mansion in 2023, is renovating the property, which was already one of the finest homes in the area. The six-bedroom mansion is being extended and transformed as McIlroy, his wife Erica Stoll, and their daughter Poppy relocate from Florida.
Previously residing in a luxurious £16.5 million mansion in Jupiter, Florida, since 2017, McIlroy and Stoll’s new home in the UK is among prestigious neighbors, including Elton John and Cliff Richard. Notably, the Sultan of Brunei, with a net worth of £22.3 billion, is one of the prominent figures in the vicinity.
Reflecting on his performance at the Memorial Tournament, McIlroy acknowledged his struggles with driver consistency but remains optimistic about the upcoming US Open.
Focusing on clinching a second major title at Shinnecock Hills after defending his Masters title in April, McIlroy aims to improve daily.
