A prominent prosecutor in the United States has been suspended amid allegations of misconduct involving romantic relationships with three individuals, including a man under investigation for a sexual assault case. Camille Johnston, aged 46, from Ray County, was relieved of her duties by Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway due to what was described as a violation of her role leading to “misconduct.”
Following the claims, a judge promptly issued a preliminary order suspending Johnston from her position citing potential conflicts of interest arising from the allegations. The Attorney General’s Office emphasized that the situation presented, at the very least, an appearance of a conflict of interest.
It was reported that Johnston engaged in a romantic affair with a suspect in a sexual assault case, identified as Juan David Gutierrez, who had fled to Mississippi. Subsequently, Johnston allegedly traveled to Florida with Gutierrez, failing to disclose his whereabouts despite being aware of them, thus implicating a conflict of interest as he was being prosecuted by Ray County.
The court documents indicated that Johnston also had a relationship with a Ray County lawyer identified as “T.T.,” who represented multiple criminal defendants in cases prosecuted by Johnston. Consequently, Johnston was required to disqualify herself and seek a special prosecutor in cases involving “T.T.”
Furthermore, a former employee of Johnston’s office claimed she was terminated after exposing Johnston’s relationship with a domestic violence suspect. Johnston was reported to have been disqualified from overseeing that case after police intervention. Additionally, allegations surfaced regarding Johnston fostering a hostile work environment characterized by fear and tension due to outbursts of anger and violence.
The Missouri Attorney General’s Office stated that Johnston might have committed various crimes through her inappropriate relationships, including potential corruption and obstruction of justice. As a result, her suspension remains in effect pending further investigation into the allegations.
