More than 1,600 individuals have been affected by a foodborne illness outbreak associated with Taco Bell restaurants. Health officials in the United States are cautioning residents in five states to refrain from consuming shredded iceberg lettuce due to an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection commonly transmitted through contaminated food or water.
A total of 1,645 cases linked to Taco Bell outlets have been confirmed in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, leading to 94 hospitalizations. The US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning advising against consuming food items containing shredded iceberg lettuce from Mexico served at Taco Bell establishments in the aforementioned states.
Cyclosporiasis can result in severe gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea, with manifestations sometimes appearing up to two weeks later. While the outbreak has affected 1,645 individuals associated with Taco Bell, nearly 7,000 people nationwide have fallen ill, as reported by NBC News.
Taco Bell has taken proactive measures by voluntarily removing lettuce supplied by an undisclosed vendor in the affected regions. The company stated that, based on ongoing discussions with public health authorities, it has swiftly eliminated potentially contaminated lettuce from its supplier in select states.
The impacted ingredient from the supplier is being permanently removed from Taco Bell’s supply chain nationwide and will be replaced within 24 hours in specific states. Although the fast-food chain did not specify the states where lettuce removal would occur, Michigan has documented the highest number of cases, surpassing 3,300 since the outbreak’s identification in May.
Health experts highlight the challenge of tracing the parasite responsible for the outbreak, compounded by cuts to federal health agencies. Steven Manderach, executive director of the Association of Food and Drug Officials, compared the difficulty to “detecting a microscopic portion of a needle in a haystack.”
