A tragic incident unfolded as a private jet crashed and caught fire on a bustling highway in Texas, resulting in one fatality. The dramatic scene saw drivers rushing to the aircraft to break windows in an attempt to rescue any trapped passengers.
The aircraft, carrying six individuals, went down on Loop 20 highway in Laredo around 10 pm local time on Tuesday. Images captured the plane overturned with flames engulfing the rear and a thick plume of smoke billowing above it following a collision with a barrier on the highway, causing severe damage to the tail section.
Authorities were unsure whether the deceased individual was onboard the plane or on the ground. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among bystanders, although five officers were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.
Flight data from FlightAware identified the aircraft as a Cessna Citation Latitude twin jet that departed from Los Cabos International Airport in Mexico at 6:19 pm local time. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Eyewitness Zayra Garza, who was driving her coworkers home at the time, described seeing a person inside the plane attempting to break the cockpit window to escape. Subsequently, several drivers stopped to aid in breaking the window from outside, with Garza’s husband also joining the rescue efforts.
Three individuals that appeared to be teenagers emerged first, followed by what seemed to be the pilot and another crew member trying to assist an unconscious person out of the wreckage. Garza expressed her shock at the unfolding events, particularly concerned about the looming threat of fire and a potential explosion.
NetJets, the company that owns the aircraft involved in the crash, confirmed the incident and stated their cooperation with the authorities in the aftermath. NetJets, a subsidiary of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, facilitates fractional ownership of private jets for individuals.
