Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela consecutively on Wednesday, causing buildings to collapse in Caracas and sparking panic at a nearby airport. The US Geological Survey reported that the initial earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1, originating west of Morón along the Caribbean coast, approximately 104 miles from Caracas. This seismic event occurred at a depth of eight miles. Shortly after, a larger 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit, with its epicenter 10 miles southwest of Morón at a depth of six miles.
Videos circulating on social media captured scenes of chaos at an airport close to the Venezuelan capital in the aftermath of the dual earthquakes.
Following the seismic activity, a tsunami advisory was issued for coastal areas within 300 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter, warning of the potential for dangerous tsunami waves.
