In a recent statement made in the Oval Office, former US President Donald Trump unintentionally sparked controversy by referring to Manchester as a “town” instead of a city. When questioned about his opinion on the potential successor to Keir Starmer, the 47th President of the United States appeared uninformed about Britain’s future leader, inadvertently casting a shadow on both Burnham and Manchester with his comments.
Trump admitted, “I don’t know anything. I see that he was, I guess, the mayor of a… town?” He also remarked, “I hear he is extremely liberal. Extremely.” This characterization of Manchester as a town rather than a city drew criticism on social media, with many Brits expressing their disapproval online.
Social media responses included one individual stating, via Twitter, “Now he insults the great city of Manchester. When will this all end?” Another comment added, “A mayor of a town? Clueless Dozy Don is off again.” A third voice chimed in, clarifying, “He was actually Mayor of Manchester, one of Britain’s largest cities, not just a town.” And a fourth quipped, “He never fails to embarrass us.”
During a Q&A session in Washington DC, Trump hinted at potential future implications in the Special Relationship by highlighting Starmer’s liberal stance and expressing his desire for the UK to resume drilling in the North Sea. This push for drilling has been a recurring theme for Trump, partly driven by his opposition to wind farms near his golf course in Scotland.
Trump suggested, “You know, I gave Keir Starmer some pretty good advice, I said ‘Open up the North Sea.’ I said ‘go to Aberdeen which is the hottest city in the whole continent, it was the oil city, it was the oil of Europe. It was terrible.'” When asked about welcoming Burnham as a Prime Minister, Trump indicated differences in ideology and emphasized the potential benefits for American companies to access British oil resources.
He continued, “You know I got along well with Starmer, I disagreed with Starmer, but I said you have two problems, immigration and energy. And crime, too by the way. You have the greatest oil field in the world, one of them. It’s called the North Sea Oil. All you have to do is bid it out to Exon, Chevron, Shell, British Petroleum.” Trump criticized what he perceived as reluctance on the left to capitalize on these opportunities, asserting, “They’re begging to go there and are willing to pay billions of dollars. But because the left is so crazy they don’t want the money.”
