Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded to disparaging comments made by U.S. cabinet members about Canada and its military, stating that such remarks are inappropriate and urging a more serious approach to trade negotiations. Carney’s comments came after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent likened Canada’s navy to a defunct attraction at the West Edmonton Mall, and U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy claimed that Canada lacks a military.
Carney criticized the American officials, emphasizing that their behavior is unproductive and called for a more constructive dialogue. He emphasized the importance of focusing on substantive discussions rather than engaging in provocative rhetoric. Since the breakdown of trade talks between Canada and the U.S. on August 21, President Donald Trump and his cabinet have resorted to social media attacks and provocations against Canada, including renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
Apart from Bessent and Duffy’s comments, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth ridiculed Canadian military cadets online, and the White House shared a video featuring Canada geese with Trump-like hair carrying guns. Canadian leaders, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, have pushed back against Trump’s actions. Carney revealed that he withdrew Canada’s negotiating team following last-minute unfair demands presented by the U.S., which would have compromised Canada’s sovereignty and economic interests.
Carney highlighted that the proposed auto deal by the U.S. would have negatively impacted the industry in the long run, a concession he could not accept. Despite the challenges, Carney expressed optimism for a potential trade agreement that upholds Canadian interests and values. Following the breakdown of negotiations, the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian exports, prompting Canada to reciprocate starting September 8.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is set to meet with Bessent during the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, N.C., to emphasize Canada’s commitment as a reliable trading partner amidst global uncertainties. Carney reiterated Canada’s stance on protecting its sovereignty and promoting cultural diversity while seeking a mutually beneficial trade deal with the U.S.
