A new traffic control measure involving the installation of London-style double red lines is being implemented in a significant national park to address issues caused by inconsiderate drivers.
Derbyshire County Council has introduced the measure in response to complaints from locals about parking chaos at popular locations in the Peak District. Day-trippers have been leaving roads congested by double parking and abandoning vehicles, leading to delays for emergency services. The initiative aims to alleviate these problems before the upcoming bank holiday weekend.
The double red lines prohibit all vehicles from stopping or parking at any time, including licensed taxis and Blue Badge holders. Motorists parking on verges behind the red lines will face a fine of £70, which can be reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.
In contrast to double yellow lines that require observation for a certain duration before issuing fines, vehicles parked on red lines can be fined instantly. While double red lines are commonly found in London, they are now being adopted by local authorities in cities such as Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and Leeds.
Councillor Charlotte Hill, the cabinet member for highways at Derbyshire County Council, mentioned that the red lines are being painted in Castleton and around Mam Tor between periods of adverse weather. She emphasized the importance of ensuring unimpeded access for emergency services and balancing the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors in the area.
Local residents have generally supported the initiative but have raised concerns about the need for active enforcement to ensure compliance. Some have suggested increasing parking facilities in the area with limited parking options.
The Peak District, established as Britain’s first national park in 1951, attracts an estimated 13 to 14 million visitors annually.
