Andy Burnham has emphasized that the primary individual responsible for the tragic death of PC Andrew Harper will not be granted early release. Debbie Adlam, the mother of the slain police officer, expressed her dismay over the potential release of two individuals convicted in connection with her son’s killing. PC Harper lost his life at the age of 28 while responding to a quad bike theft in Sulhamstead, Berkshire, in August 2019.
The fatal incident occurred when PC Harper became entangled in a strap attached to a car and was dragged along a country road as three teenage suspects fled the scene of the crime. The driver, Henry Long, received a 16-year sentence and is not eligible for early release. However, Adlam criticized the possibility of the two passengers in the vehicle being freed.
The passengers, Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers, who were both 17 at the time of the incident, were sentenced to 13 years in custody for manslaughter following a trial at the Old Bailey in 2020. The Ministry of Justice confirmed that both individuals could potentially be released halfway through their sentences.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Adlam revealed that she had been informed by the Ministry of Justice about the potential reduction of Cole and Bowers’ sentences, describing it as a painful reminder of the irreparable loss of her son. The Ministry of Justice expressed condolences to PC Harper’s family and friends, emphasizing the government’s commitment to public safety by increasing prison capacity and incarcerating dangerous offenders.
