The tragic death of a seven-year-old boy weighing 255 pounds (116 kilograms) has led to charges of murder, torture, and child abuse against his parents, according to prosecutors. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton emphasized that the child was not receiving adequate nutrition due to improper feeding practices by the parents. The boy, Casper O’Brien, passed away in November after emergency responders were called to their Flint residence when he stopped breathing. Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, have each been charged with second-degree murder, torture, and three counts of second-degree child abuse.
The parents have been arraigned and are currently detained without bond in Genesee County. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Thursday. Casper, who stood at 4 feet, 2.5 inches (128 centimeters) tall, was medically classified as obese, with his cause of death attributed to dilated cardiomyopathy aggravated by his weight. This condition affects the heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently, impacting other bodily functions such as the lungs.
Allegations in the criminal complaints suggest that the parents neglected to seek medical treatment for Casper despite having access to healthcare. The family environment was reportedly characterized by the child consuming mostly snack foods. Casper, who was nonverbal and confined to bed, suffered from severe bed sores and multiple rashes.
Authorities noted the presence of substantial trash piles in the household, and Casper was not attending school. Leyton described the hoarding situation in the home as alarming. Additionally, one of the child abuse charges pertains to the couple’s 5-year-old daughter, who has been placed in foster care.
According to the autopsy report, Casper’s last medical visit was in February 2024 when he was diagnosed with respiratory issues and a metabolic disorder. Despite being advised on diet and exercise, he never saw a pediatric endocrinologist as recommended. The report did not specify the exact nature of the metabolic disease documented in his medical records.
Prosecutor Leyton expressed deep sorrow over the tragic circumstances, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the case. The legal representatives for the accused parents refrained from commenting on the ongoing investigation.
