Ontario Premier Doug Ford and his cabinet are scheduled to hold a press briefing in Hamilton on Monday following the breakdown of trade negotiations between Canada and the United States. In response to the trade war’s repercussions, Ford expressed defiance towards President Trump, stating that he can “kiss my behind.” The implementation of 50% U.S. tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect early Saturday, prompting Prime Minister Mark Carney to announce retaliatory tariffs of equal measure against the U.S. starting on September 8.
Trump intensified the trade dispute through a post on Truth Social on Monday, criticizing Canada for allegedly exploiting the United States. He also declared that beginning on January 1, 2027, the U.S. will raise tariffs on Canadian automobiles, car parts, and steel to 50%.
Ford, in response to Trump’s tariff threats, voiced his strong opposition during an interview with Toronto radio station Newstalk 1010. He described the U.S. president as arrogant and cocky, emphasizing the need to take decisive action against such behavior. Ford, along with other provincial leaders, supported Carney’s decision to walk away from the trade agreement.
The premier will be accompanied by Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli and Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy during the briefing at 1:30 p.m. ET, as per an advisory from the premier’s office.
Daniel Tisch, CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the importance of targeted retaliation against the U.S., focusing on American goods with clear Canadian alternatives readily available. Despite the setback in trade negotiations, Tisch expressed optimism about Canada’s ability to navigate through this challenging period, citing the country’s job growth lead over the U.S. and the resilience of its economy.
Tisch highlighted the need for collaboration between the business sector and the government to make a positive impact amid the ongoing trade tensions.
