“Nova Scotia Apple Industry Expands to Taiwan Amid Trade Tensions”

Nova Scotia’s apple industry is set to expand its global reach this year, with plans to ship a portion of the upcoming apple harvest to Taiwan, as announced by the province’s fruit growers association. This strategic move aims to diversify market opportunities in response to trade tensions between Canada and the United States.

While the U.S. currently dominates Nova Scotia’s apple exports, accounting for 90% of the total, local growers are proactively exploring new markets like Taiwan and Thailand. The Nova Scotia Fruit Growers’ Association is leveraging the absence of direct tariffs on the sector to establish a stronger global presence and mitigate potential trade disruptions.

Emily Lutz, the association’s executive director, emphasized the importance of expanding market alternatives to showcase the quality of Nova Scotian produce. Recent data revealed that Nova Scotia exported over $28 million worth of apples to the U.S. last year, with Vietnam emerging as the second-largest market for Nova Scotia apples.

Supported by the federal Agrimarketing program, which allocated $75 million over five years to aid agriculture businesses in market diversification, the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers’ Association secured $300,000 to enhance its market development initiatives. This funding will be utilized for activities such as international exhibitions and hiring marketing experts.

Michael Van Meekeren, vice-president of Van Meekeren Farms Ltd., expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to access new markets despite this year’s apple crop not being record-breaking. He highlighted the importance of exporting premium apple varieties like honeycrisp and ambrosia, which have a strong global appeal, without straining local supply.

With Southeast Asian countries presenting untapped markets for Nova Scotia apples due to their limited production, the province aims to capitalize on its unique harvest season timing compared to producers in Australia and New Zealand. This strategic market expansion aligns with Nova Scotia’s commitment to promoting its superior-quality apples on the global stage.
